Ipomoea al’ba (al’ba)

moonflower

annual

I think my horticultural education in Montreal was somewhat lacking, as I knew nothing of moonflowers or that any plants would bloom at night. Here is a plant that is simply enchanting, beautiful, and wonderfully fragrant to boot. The large clean white flowers open in late afternoon and into the evening, and on a moonlit night are like white flying saucers. The vines are vigorous and can be used to great effect climbing up porches, covering stone walls, or on trellises. Put them where you can also enjoy the fragrance. Collect the weird-looking fruit when they turn gray and keep the seeds for next spring.
